"The roots of Placebo go back to when Brian Molko (vocals/guitar), met Stefan Olsdal (bass), at a school in Luxembourg at when they were 8. Coincidentally the two encountered each other again in London's tube in 1994 and decided to start a band. Molko had pursued acting at a drama college but shifted focus full-time to music. With the addition of Robert Schultzberg Placebo made the transition from art-rock to a new wave, punkish beat. Schultzberg had previously played in a band with Olsdal in Sweden. In 1995, Placebo made their debut with their single, 'Bruise Pristine.' The reaction this caused ensured a major label bidding war for their services. With Deceptive Records, Placebo released a second single, 'Come Home', in 1996. In 1997 they put on a show for David Bowie's 50th birthday party. They finally released their popular self-titled debut, shortly afterward. Placebo gained most of its ground in the industry from its UK number 4 hit 'Nancy Boy'. The media took special interest to Molko's androgynous look. Placebo began recording their second album after they took on drummer Steve Hewitt to replace Schultzberg. They continued success with hits 'Pure Morning' and 'You Don't Care About Us'. The band members also had appearances movie by Todd Haynes' about Glamour rock, Velvet Goldmine. They continued to do work with Bowie, occasionally doing shows together. In 2000 they released their single 'Taste In Men' which was followed by their third album, Black Market Music."
