Alternative singer-songwriter Sinead O'Connor was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1966 and grew up in a turbulent household facing divorce and abuse. By the time she was a teenager O'Connor got into music and shortly after, she was discovered by the drummer of In Tua Nua. After co-writing a few songs with that band, O'Connor started her solo career. By 1985 she moved to London and released her debut album, 1987's The Lion and the Cobra. The record featured the alternative radio hit ""Mandinka."" With the release of 1990's I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, O'Connor became an alternative rock superstar, thanks to the hit single ""Nothing Compares 2 U"" and her controversial opinions. Head shaved, O'Connor appeared regularly in the American press for saying controversial things. O'Connor released her next album Am I Not Your Girl? in 1992. The album's release was overshadowed by a legendary appearance on Saturday Night Live during which O'Connor teared up a photo of Pope John Paul II and shouted ""Fight the real enemy!"" As expected, this shocked the audience, including her Catholic fans. O'Connor escaped from the spotlight for the next two years. In 1994 she released Universal Mother, which was still stigmatised by her controversial past. In 2000, O'Connor returned with Faith & Courage, her first album in six years.
