The White Stripes is one of the newest back-to-basics rock acts to emerge from Detroit, Michigan, USA. The bass-free duo/band was formed by Jack White (guitar/vocals) and Meg White (drums) in 1997. The Whites, variously assumed to be husband and ex-wife or brother and sister, but both denied, formed their new band in 1997. The band's musical output is inspired by folk blues, country 60s Britpop and Broadway show tunes. The White Stripes' stunning typical stage presence, dressed in minimalist red and white outfits, is allied to their thrilling grasp of the rudiments of timeless rock music. After their debut 7-inch single, ""Let's Shake Hands"" in 1997 and ""Lafayette Blues"", they relocated to the leading independent Sympathy For The Record Industry. The White Stripes debuted with the single ""The Big Three Killed My Baby"" and their self titled album, which earned them two thumbs up across the board. Their next album, De Stijl, brought the White Stripes even more success and critical acclaim. The White Stripes got incredible reception in the UK, and was applauded by The Daily Telegraph, The Sun and Radio 4""s Today programme. The influential John Peel even compared the band with legendary artists as Jimi Hendrix and the Sex Pistols. The Whites justified the media hype surrounding them by releasing an excellent third album, White Blood Cells. Their latest effort, Elephant was recorded at London's tiny Toe Rag Studios using only vintage analogue equipment. In the 2003 European MTV awards, the White Stripes were nominated for 4 awards, including best album for Elephant.
