"The Mavericks are a rock band from Miami, Florida, USA, an odd origin for a country band, considering the popularity in the area of rock and dance music. The Mavericks were brought together by Raul Malo (lead vocals & guitar) who is originally from Cuba. Malo grew up playing his parents records of Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Bill Haley. Robert Reynolds (bass), was one of few in the area that shared Malo's taste for country rock. Reynolds brought on his friend Paul Deakin (drums). The Mavericks' independently debut album in 1990 lead them to signing with MCA Records. Under their new label and with their new guitarist David Lee Holt, they released From Hell To Paradise. The album was a small success. In 1994 The Mavericks made their big breakthrough with What A Crying Shame. In 1995 the album, which was produced by Don Cook, went platinum after long and steady sales. The album included Jesse Winchester's ""O What A Thrill"" which broke into the US Top 20 singles chart. In the same year The Mavericks replaced Holt with Nick Kane. The Mavericks followed up their success from their last album with Music For All Occassions, while simultaneously sweeping up a CMA for their work. They went on to receive another CMA award in 1996. One of the featured tracks, ""Dance The Night Away"", gained particular popularity in the UK, helping the album to break into the UK Top 10. In the US the album reached number 4 in the Top 20. The Mavericks reunited in 2003 to tour for their fans once again after several of the band members were spending time on their solo projects."
